2009 Pennsylvania American Legion
74th Annual High School Essay Contest
"How Can We Expand Our Energy Resources?"
It is through the annual Department of Pennsylvania American Legion
Essay scholarship contest that students are provided an opportunity to showcase their talents and abilities in English by using originality, accuracy and research as evidence, while learning about the responsibilities and duties of good citizenship. This can be both rewarding and fun!
Deadline: February 6, 2009.

First Place State Winner: $3,500.00 Scholarship and a trip to the 2009 Convention in June to read their essay. In the event the student does not attend college, they will receive $300.00 cash.
Second Place State Winner: $3,000.00 Scholarship and a plaque. In the event the student does no attend college, they will receive $200.00 cash.
Third Place State Winner: $2,500.00 Scholarship and a plaque. In the event the student does not attend college, they will receive $200.00 cash.
There are various scholarship awards from each level of the American Legion as your essay works its way up to the Pennsylvaina American Legion Finals.

Essay Contest Rules
1. The topic for this years Department of Pennsylvania essay contest is "HOW CAN WE EXPAND OUR ENERGY RESOURCES?"
2. Any student enrolled in grades 9 through 12 in a Pennsylvania public, parochial or private school, or who is home schooled is eligible to participate.
3. ALL essays MUST have a cover page containing the following information: Essay topic/title:
"HOW CAN WE EXPAND OUR ENERGY RESOURCES?"
* Name, Address, Telephone, & E-mail address of the contestant
*Sponsoring American Legion Post number, name & location
*Parent/guardian name
4. The topic/title MUST appear on page one as well as the cover page of the essay.
5. ALL "Eassay Text" MUST be no less than 500 words and no more than 1,000 words.
6. Typewritten essays are preferred; but, not required. 
7. Essays shall be judged on the following:
*Proper English structure
*Accuracy
* Extent of information
*Originality
Any material not original must be cited in a bibliohrapy for the infomation of the judges, stating publication, volume, page, date, publisher and author.
8. Students MUST certify that essays are prepared without assistance other than that provided for all members of their class.
